Solving Addition Problems with Objects

This is a way that I teach addition to my students. I’m going to show you the materials that I need to do this activity. I have a pencil. I have the plus symbol. I have the tiles, which are the counters and I have a little sheet, where they’re going to write the problem. And the pouch is, has already, problems that are already written on little cards. Like 2+2. When you want to do this activity, you can use all kinds of other things like beads, or marbles. Friends, we are going to learn to do addition with tiles. So, what we are going to do is first, you take this piece of paper. And then, you will do. look inside here and find a problem. And then, first, you write your problem, four plus (that’s a symbol for addition), plus three equal to. So, I’m going to write four plus three. Then, I’m going to take my tiles four, one, two, three, four. Three, one, two, three. Now, you see what my answer will be, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. So, four plus three equal to seven. Put my tiles back here, and then I’m going to put my problem in this little pouch. Then, I get to take this home. Would you like to try one, please? Sure! Would you like to try one, please? Get your problem out. Four plus, now get your tiles. what’s your answer? Eight. Wonderful!
