Touch Counting with Objects

In this activity, students use objects, or counters, to practice touch counting. They roll a die and then lay out that number of discs. They then touch each disc as they count the number aloud.

I’m P.J. Auchterlonie, and today my children will have a math lesson involving counting, using one on one correspondence. Having a good number since helps children with adding and subtracting and higher operations in math. So, we’re going to be counting today. And, we’re going to be counting one on one, is what we’re going to be doing. So, when you count you will touch while you’re counting, to make sure that you are getting that one-on-one correspondence. I’m going to do the same thing. I have my die I’m going to roll it, then I’m going to count out that many chips. But, I’m going to touch count. Watch, and see if I can do that. I have the number four. So, I need 1, 2, 3, 4 counters. Okay, here I go, one, two, three, four. And, just to make sure I’m right, look I’ve got my finger, and I’m going to touch count, one, two, three, four. Tenaya, you may roll your die. And, how many does she have? Two. Nice, I like the way you were touch counting that. What’s your number? Can you touch? Nice. Okay, and it’s my turn so, I’ve already got those four, watch what I’m going to do next. Oh, my goodness. I have six. Now I have to make sure that I really have six spaces. If I don’t, do you remember what I say when I’ve got too many? I got, oh rats, because I can’t put it in. I have six spaces, I can put these in. One, two, three, four, five, six. But, now when I touch count, I’m going to count all of them, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Okay, Alex, there’s your die. 1. Okay, can you touch count the whole thing? Very nice.
