by

Heidi Jo Gallagher | Wichita Collegiate School | Wichita, Kansas

Throughout the whole school year, I do a self-portrait project. We start the year and I have them draw a picture of themselves. Frequently it’s just a circle, maybe an eye or two, but the kids, as they develop in the ages of three, four and five, have a better self-awareness. So, they start learning that oh I have legs and I have eyes, and soon as time progresses, they’ll get all the way to an entire body. But maybe their placement it wrong. Their arms still on their head. Or, their legs are extremely long. So were working on self-awareness and knowing our personal self, and the dimensions and proportions of our bodies. The students also start to learn a sense of identity. So, in the beginning of the year they have their simple drawings, but then as the year progresses and I show them the comparison of the beginning of the year versus now, the children see oh look at how its changed. I know have arms in my picture. Or look I drew my hair long, but now it’s short. Their starting to recognize themselves as a unique individual, and the skills that they have changed, in grown with throughout the year.
