Police Officer Game

by

Cindy Johnson | Wichita Collegiate School | Wichita, Kansas

This game teaches young students about the role of police officers as community helpers. The teacher selects one child to be the “officer,” and gives bits of information describing one of the children in the room. The “officer” tries to guess which child it is.

When I’m teaching social studies, I love to play a game called officer, officer. Basically, I get the kids in a group to sit in a circle, and I have one child who stands in the middle and they are the officer. And then I say officer, officer my child is missing, can you help me? My child is wearing a red shirt. Then the officer looks around the room and points to a child that might have a red shirt. I also try to encourage them to say that child’s name. If they guess it incorrectly I say, good guess but my child has a red shirt and blue pants on. Then the officer has to look around and point to the child who might have the red shirt and blue pants. Once he finds them and I say yes you found my child. This also initiates the discussion of police officers, and how they help us as community helpers.
