Hi, teaching young children about map skills can be sometimes a daunting task. We look at a globe and we see all of the countries, but it just doesn’t make sense to them. So, one of the things I have done is to take a map and put it on my ceiling, children can lay on the floor and look at each of the sections of my world map, with my compass rose, the oceans identified, all of the continents identified, a map key or legend, and even some special places in the world. In our class we read a story about a little boy named Adam, who travels around the world in 40 days. And with my map on the ceiling they are excited to watch him as he travels to all of the famous places. Remember think outside of the box when helping students learn map skills. Be the change you wish to see in the world.
