Nooks and Crannies

Students’ love quiet cozy spots to sit while they’re reading, or doing other activities. I have created several spots inside my classroom where students can go, and have a quiet time, have a safe spot, or just simply a reading spot. This is one of them, this is called the light house in my room. And, just simply a round chair inside of some curtains, with a few little comfy pillows. Here’s another spot that I have created, underneath this blanket is simply three benches. I have put a soft blanket on top, some pillows for students to lean against, and under a great umbrella, that they can read and enjoy a quiet time right over here. While this is my class library, when were not using it as a library, I like to use it as a quiet reading spot. Just another area that you can have some comfy pillows, quiet area for students to do their independent reading in. This is another spot that I’ve just got some very inexpensive lawn chairs, put them up in an area that we normally do some math in. But these are easy to move. So, sometimes I have it as a reading nook, and other times we use it as a math area. Now, this is a really tight spot in here, but it’s one of the students’ favorite places to sit. I just have a couple of bean bags, and students crawl in there with their book box and they start reading away. Now I have purchased a few pieces of furniture that are children sizes, but most children just enjoy laying on the ground with a comfy pillow. Creating little nooks and crannies in your classroom is not hard. Visit garage sales, find clearance racks. My students love to take a blanket with them, along with a pillow and lay on the ground. Very simple, usually inexpensive. One of my students most favorite places to sit, is right here in my teacher chair. So, make that an option. Allow them to sit in the teachers chair for a reward, or even for a daily, um, reading time. Try these ideas in your classroom today.
