Lining up, then out the door

Using a technique I like to call the Silent Blast-off, I help my students focus while lining up, then go out the classroom door to the next adventure.

Sometimes when we have to go from one part of the school to another, it’s important to line up and remain quiet. What I like to do with my students so they’re ready to walk down the hall and not disturb the other classes is I have my four and five-year-olds do a silent blast-off. We put our hands in the air. So I will say, “hands up” once we’re in line, so they’ll put their hands up and we’re going to count silently. I tell them we do not make voice words, we use the words, but we just make it with our mouth. So we put our hands up, and then we count. We start at ten. We go: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Blast off!
See how silent that was? The kids are all quiet, and if they did a really good job, let’s give a silent round of applause. A thumbs up! And we can go out the door and on our way
