Learning the students’ name is a very important part of the first day of school, and the entire year. It shows much respect when the teacher learns their name quickly, and this way they feel comfortable, and welcome in the classroom. Of course, we may start with them having name tags on, weather they are on the front or back of their shirt. This way they are safe the first few weeks of school, and other teachers know who their teacher is, and they can call them by name. Calling kids by name is very powerful, it means that you care for them, and you want them to be in your classroom. It’s just like we would feel if somebody forgot our name. I joke about how, if your shorter than me, I’ll always remember your name, because, I’m your teacher, and it’s my job to keep you safe, and to be in charge of you. It also, again, makes the kids feel very welcome. We play games to remember our friends’ names. As well, I do a lot of hand shaking, and greeting in the early childhood, making sure the kids know how to greet each other, and how to make their other friends feel welcome as well.
