End of the Day Routines

by

Amanda Leger | Wichita Collegiate School | Wichita, Kansas

The teacher uses end of day routines to end the school day positively. She has the students do two exercises: in the first exercise, students talk about one great and one not so great thing that happened to them during the day. In the second exercise, called “A Moment of Kindness;” students take turns recognizing the kind acts that their classmates did during the day.

It’s just as important to end your day on the right note, as it is to begin the day. The beginning of the day is always full of excitement, and welcome to school, and we’re going to have a great day, but leaving, by the time we’ve been through all of our routines, and all of our procedures during the day it can be exhausting, and tiring, and they’re just ready to go home. But, I think it’s so important to leave, with knowing that it was an exciting day, and ready to come back the next day. I have two different procedures that I can do at the end of the day, that really help the kids to focus on how their day was, and what they can do to make tomorrow a better day. First, I can have the procedure where we go around the room and talk about one great thing that happened in the day, and one not so great thing that happened in the day. The next procedure I have is a moment of kindness in a moment of kindness I have each kid look around the room think of something great someone else had done for them or something they caught their friend going that was kind. I will begin I will pick one student tell them something that I saw them do kind or something that I just like about them and then that student picks another student and through out the procedure every student gets one kind thing said about them and that way they leave the day feeling good about going home and preparing for the next day and just feeling good about themselves. Look around and see who was kind to you who was nice to you today and you know friends I hope there was a moment of color for everyone today. And that should be your goal what can I do kind everyday? My teacher’s helper is Adeline. Adeline, you may begin. Adeline: “Mrs. Leger.” Teacher: “What kind words do you have today?” Adeline: “I love you!” Teacher: “That was very kind, Adeline. Thank you. I’m going to choose Mason today. Mason, you are always kind, and I love that your heart always wants to help, there was a train puzzle on the ground. And I don’t believe that Mason was building it, but Mason went right over and cleaned it up, that was kid mason, thank you.”
