Activities for Teaching Basic Shapes

by

Sumita Ghosh | Wichita Collegiate School | Wichita, Kansas

After the teacher discusses the number of sides and corners each shape has, the students do different activities involving circles, squares, and triangles. They can trace the shapes, cut them out of paper, and play a game where they find those shapes in their classroom.

Today I am going to show you how I teach the basic shapes of geometry to my students. I’m going to do a, talk about a circle, a square, and a triangle. A circle. A circle is round, all the way there are no corners. And the circle could be different sizes, it could be big, it could be small. A square. A square has four sides, and they are all the same. One, two, three, four. And, four corners, let’s count one, two, three, four. And, a square could be big, and the square could be small, and the lines are straight. If you look at the line they are straight. Next is a triangle. A triangle has three sides one, two, three. And, three corners one, two, three. But, just like a square all sides are the same. A triangle, not always that all sides will be the same. Next, I play a game with the children. And say, I spy with my little eye something that is the shape of a circle in the classroom. And, I let my children think about it and share what they see. Or I say, I spy with my little eye something that is the shape of a square in the classroom. And, that’s how we play the game and reinforce the concept. Then, I have these. These are, we call them insets and we use them, the square, triangle, circle. And we use them for, the children can use them for tracing. And, I have the white sheet of paper right here and they can, there, set right here, the frame and they can just trace it. And, they can make different designs inside, and take it home. And, also, we do the cutting activity, where I just made color copies, how to cut and color. And, the children can cut with the scissors, around, and take it home. So, these are the different ways that I teach the basic shapes of geometry a circle, a square, and a triangle. Hope that helped.
