Summarizing is taking some information and restating the main ideas in as few words as possible. Students can summarize orally… … by drawing a picture … … in writing … … or even by acting out the main ideas of a lesson. A summary does not include opinions; it’s just about the facts. Summarizing can take time for students to learn, because they tend to include either too much information or not enough. So the teacher needs to show how to summarize many times, and the students need lots of practice, until they understand. Let’s review: Summarizing is restating the main ideas in as few words as possible. It can be done orally … by drawing pictures … in writing … or by acting it out. Students need lots of examples and practice to learn Summarizing.
