Prior Knowledge

by

Teach for Life | Wichita, Kansas

As students learn, they build upon the knowledge they already possess. Asking students to demonstrate prior knowledge of a topic can help lay the foundation for a lesson, as well as connect other, related lessons to the subject at hand.

As students learn, they build upon what they already know. So in the Prior Knowledge method, the teacher asks students to share what they know about the lesson topic. The students’ Prior Knowledge could be either from their life experiences or from previous lessons. Reviewing what they already know is like creating a foundation that they will build upon in that day’s lesson. This helps students to connect the information from different lessons, or from their life experiences and deepens their understanding of a subject.
