Organized Student Seating

by

Amanda Leger | Wichita Collegiate School | Wichita, Kansas

There are many benefits to assigning each student to a specific seat in the classroom. Here, the teacher tries to seat them in boy-girl order and makes sure to change the assignments at the beginning of each month. This creates order, helps students make new friends, and keeps them focused on learning.

Seating arrangement is very important in every classroom. Some teachers choose to let their kids decide where they want to sit. And that doesn’t always work out because we get relationships with other friends in the classroom, and we can have disruptive behavior, it can lead to not being able to focus correctly. So, in my classroom in early childhood, I choose where they sit. On my carpet, I have letters around a pond. And at the beginning of the year, I have them stand around and I chose were they sit I usually try to sit them boy girl boy girl this kind of helps with the behavior issues and academics as well in my seating for snack or for work I also sit them boy girl boy girl. Now, this helps them to get relationships with new friends and to form kind of a family unit. I do switch their seats once a month. So, it’s kind of that celebration of a brand-new month so you get a brand-new seat, a brand-new position to sit and new neighbors on each side. When I do have them, when I chose their new places to sit I have them introduce their selves again to the neighbor on the left the neighbor on the right and then have them promise that they will take care of each other as they sit together for the next month. This really helps them to focus on the learning and they can sit with whoever want at lunch or they can play with who they want at recess but as the teacher, I chose where they sit to help them to be there best.
