Moving from Counting Numbers to Writing Them

The teacher and students count a group of objects together, touching each one as they count aloud. The teacher then shows the written number that matches to the number of objects.

Hi. I’m going to talk about how I teach young children how to count. It’s very important that the children learn that for every number word they say there is only one object that goes with this, and that’s why we practice counting this way. One of the things they do is we count by clapping, one, two, three, four, five. Then they can start to touch things, one, two, three, four, five. They can also touch objects, just any object you have in the classroom, one, two, three, remembering it’s very important that the children count with their finger and touch as they count. Another thing you can use, buttons, one, two, three, four, five. Once the children have, have mastered knowing that for each time you touch an object is a number, then I begin to write the number of objects that they counted. One, two, three, four, five. And, that’s the number five. And, that’s how I teach children to count with accuracy. Thank you.
