Beginning of the Class Routine

by

Heidi Jo Gallagher | Wichita Collegiate School | Wichita, Kansas

The teacher provides stations for the students to play independently while she takes attendance and prepares. The students immediately begin learning after they enter the classroom. This also provides an opportunity for the students to socialize before they begin group lessons.

So, after my students come into my classroom, they are expected to go straight to work and start their learning. So, they come in, they check-in on their wall, and then they go to the table that I have set out for them. Usually there is activities that emphasize fine motor skills. So, it gets their brains engaged, and it gets their movement engaged. And they work on these activities all on their own. They can talk with their friends, and chat a little about the day, and how it’s been since they’ve seen each other. And then, when I’m ready, and I have all of the attendance taken, and I have my work done, then they can stop their table toys, clean up, and then come and join us for our next activity together.
