Alphabet Chant

by

Heidi Gallagher | Wichita Collegiate School | Wichita, Kansas

To aid in stand letter recognition, we play a game where we have a call out and echo pattern between the teacher and students. This Alphabet Chant is an activity I like to use “student teachers” for and let my kids take the lead.

Sometimes when we finish an activity just a little bit early and we’re not ready to start our next job, I have a little game I like to play with my children. Kids really like to chant, so this is a chant and I’m gonna teach it to you. I keep a set of alphabet letters next to my pocket chart, and when I’m ready, I get my alphabet letters out, and I say, “I have a letter you can name,” and then I put my hand up and they echo me. They go, “I have a letter you can name.” And then I say “I can name it just the same.” “Ready?” and then they say, “Ready!” “Sound off!” “Sound off!” And I’ll hold up my letter, and then they’re gonna tell me, “It’s a D!” I’m gonna put it in the chart, and then I do it again: “I have a letter you can name,” and I wait for them, “I can name it just the same,” “Ready,” “Sound off,” and then I pull up a new letter, and they’re gonna tell me “A” and we’re gonna do this until I’m out of time and I’m ready to start my next activity.
